Why the Same Tile Job Needs Different Mortar Bag Counts
Updated: 9/24/2026
The tile mortar calculator answers a practical shopping question: how many bags of thin-set mortar does a tiled area need? The answer is not determined by area alone. The calculator’s three named manufacturer sources give different coverage figures for different products, and the same product can also cover a different area when it is spread with a different trowel notch. That is why the product choice in the calculator includes the notch size rather than treating every bag as interchangeable.
The same area can produce different bag counts
CUSTOM VersaBond, retrieved 2026-09-05, CUSTOM PremiumPlus, retrieved 2026-09-05, and QUIKRETE Thin-Set Multi-Purpose No. 1550, retrieved 2026-09-05, each provide coverage information in the sources used by the calculator. The CUSTOM VersaBond product page gives a range of 90 to 100 sq ft per bag with a 1/4” square-notch trowel, 60 to 67 sq ft with a 1/4”×3/8” square-notch, and 42 to 47 sq ft with a 1/2” square-notch. Its table also gives 34 to 38 sq ft for a 45° U-Notch and 42 to 47 sq ft for a 30° U-Notch. Those figures are from the CUSTOM VersaBond product page.
CUSTOM PremiumPlus TDS-193 gives 85 to 95 sq ft per bag with a 1/4” square-notch trowel and 60 to 67 sq ft with a 1/4”×3/8” square-notch. QUIKRETE data sheet No. 1550 gives approximately 80 sq ft per bag with a 1/4” square-notch trowel. These are the product-and-notch combinations named by those manufacturer sources.
For the calculator’s purchase quantity, the relevant comparison is the lower end of each range. The calculator uses 90 sq ft per bag for CUSTOM VersaBond with a 1/4” square-notch, 60 sq ft for CUSTOM VersaBond with a 1/4”×3/8” square-notch, 42 sq ft for CUSTOM VersaBond with a 1/2” square-notch, and 34 sq ft for CUSTOM VersaBond with a 45° U-Notch. These lower bounds come from the coverage table on the CUSTOM VersaBond product page.
The same conservative comparison gives 85 sq ft per bag for CUSTOM PremiumPlus with a 1/4” square-notch and 60 sq ft for CUSTOM PremiumPlus with a 1/4”×3/8” square-notch, both from CUSTOM PremiumPlus TDS-193. For QUIKRETE Thin-Set Multi-Purpose No. 1550, the calculator uses approximately 80 sq ft per bag with a 1/4” square-notch, from QUIKRETE data sheet No. 1550.
Here are several of the calculator’s eight sourced combinations shown side by side. The values are the conservative coverage figures used by the calculator, and each row is tied to the named manufacturer source.
| Product and trowel notch | Coverage used for the bag calculation | Source |
|---|---|---|
| CUSTOM VersaBond, 1/4” square-notch | 90 sq ft per bag | CUSTOM VersaBond product page |
| CUSTOM VersaBond, 1/2” square-notch | 42 sq ft per bag | CUSTOM VersaBond product page |
| CUSTOM PremiumPlus, 1/4” square-notch | 85 sq ft per bag | CUSTOM PremiumPlus TDS-193 |
| QUIKRETE Thin-Set Multi-Purpose No. 1550, 1/4” square-notch | approximately 80 sq ft per bag | QUIKRETE data sheet No. 1550 |
Imagine the same 100 sq ft tiled area and no waste allowance. With CUSTOM VersaBond and a 1/4” square-notch, the source-backed lower-bound coverage is 90 sq ft per bag, so the unrounded result is about 1.1111 bags and the purchase quantity is 2 bags. With CUSTOM VersaBond and a 1/2” square-notch, the source-backed lower bound is 42 sq ft per bag, so the same area divides to about 2.3810 bags and requires 3 bags after rounding up. With CUSTOM PremiumPlus at a 1/4” square-notch, the lower bound is 85 sq ft per bag, so the same area divides to about 1.1765 bags and requires 2 bags. With QUIKRETE Thin-Set Multi-Purpose No. 1550 at a 1/4” square-notch, approximately 80 sq ft per bag gives about 1.25 bags, which requires 2 bags. The product-and-notch coverage figures come from the named manufacturer sources; the division and rounding follow the calculator’s formula.
The first comparison shows the main point clearly: changing the notch while keeping the product and tiled area the same changes the bag count from 2 bags to 3 bags. The second comparison shows a product change at a similar notch: CUSTOM VersaBond’s 90 sq ft lower bound and CUSTOM PremiumPlus’s 85 sq ft lower bound both produce 2 bags for that area, but they are not the same coverage figure. QUIKRETE’s approximately 80 sq ft figure is lower again. Product choice matters, but the notch can move the result more dramatically than the difference between these products at the same notch.
Why the calculator asks for the notch first
The calculator asks the user to choose a product-and-notch combination because the notch controls how much mortar is spread across each square foot. The coverage figures in the manufacturer tables are not one universal number for a product. CUSTOM VersaBond’s source moves from 90 to 100 sq ft per bag at a 1/4” square-notch down to 42 to 47 sq ft at a 1/2” square-notch, and to 34 to 38 sq ft at a 45° U-Notch. The product page therefore shows that the spreading tool is part of the coverage specification.
This is the real driver of the bag count. A larger or otherwise different notch can place more mortar into the ridges that are spread over the substrate, leaving less coverage per bag. The calculator does not need a separate guess about that effect: it uses the coverage number attached to the selected notch. CUSTOM PremiumPlus TDS-193 likewise distinguishes its 1/4” square-notch figure from its 1/4”×3/8” square-notch figure. QUIKRETE data sheet No. 1550 supplies its own approximately 80 sq ft figure for a 1/4” square-notch.
The calculator’s explanation also makes a product-type point. CUSTOM VersaBond is identified there as polymer-modified, while CUSTOM PremiumPlus is identified as unmodified; their 1/4” square-notch ranges are 90 to 100 sq ft and 85 to 95 sq ft respectively. QUIKRETE Thin-Set Multi-Purpose No. 1550 is identified there as polymer-modified, yet its same-notch figure is approximately 80 sq ft per bag. Those source-backed figures do not support using product type alone as a shortcut. The specific product and the specific notch are what the coverage data actually describe.
How the calculator chooses a conservative coverage value
When a manufacturer gives a range, the calculator uses the lower bound as the purchase quantity. For CUSTOM VersaBond, that means 90 rather than 100 sq ft per bag for the 1/4” square-notch combination, 60 rather than 67 sq ft for the 1/4”×3/8” combination, and 42 rather than 47 sq ft for the 1/2” combination. Those ranges are from the CUSTOM VersaBond product page. For CUSTOM PremiumPlus, the corresponding lower-bound choices are 85 rather than 95 sq ft and 60 rather than 67 sq ft, from CUSTOM PremiumPlus TDS-193. QUIKRETE data sheet No. 1550 gives approximately 80 sq ft rather than a range.
Using the lower bound means the shopping quantity assumes the less generous end of the source’s own coverage statement. The calculator explains that this makes the purchase quantity more conservative, while also warning that the number printed on the bag you buy takes precedence. Actual coverage on the job can come in higher. The source limits also say that only the eight product-and-notch combinations with sourced figures are covered, so a different product or notch should not be silently substituted for one of these rows.
Worked example: 100 sq ft with CUSTOM VersaBond
The calculator’s supplied example uses a 100 sq ft area, CUSTOM VersaBond, a 1/4” square-notch trowel, and no waste allowance. CUSTOM VersaBond gives a 90-to-100 sq ft per bag range for that combination, and the calculator uses the lower bound, 90 sq ft per bag. The calculation is 100 ÷ 90 ≈ 1.1111 bags. Because mortar is bought in whole bags, the result rounds up to 2 bags; a bag is not divisible, so the calculation always rounds up to the next whole bag. The area, coverage range, lower-bound choice, and rounding rule are the calculator page’s own worked example, with the coverage supplied by CUSTOM VersaBond.
That example is deliberately simple: it uses no waste allowance, so the only inputs changing the result are the area and the selected sourced combination. If the same area were paired with the CUSTOM VersaBond 1/2” square-notch figure, the lower coverage value from the CUSTOM VersaBond product page would lead to a higher bag count. The point is not that one product is always better; it is that the notch-specific coverage figure must travel with the product choice.
What this count does and does not cover
This is a mortar bag count only. The calculator does not calculate tile size, tile count, or tile weight, and it does not include grout, underlayment, waterproofing membrane, or substrate preparation. It also does not include a back-buttering allowance for large-format tile because no sourced figure covers it. The source limits separately describe the mortar coverage requirement between the substrate and the tile underside as a workmanship requirement, not a material-quantity variable, so that requirement is not factored into the bag count.
For a job spanning multiple rooms or areas, the calculator’s limits say to run each area separately. For a single area, select the actual product and notch combination, use the coverage printed on the bag when it differs from the sourced planning figure, and let the calculator round the result up to a whole number of bags. The tile mortar calculator keeps that relationship visible: area is divided by the manufacturer-sourced coverage attached to the chosen product and notch.
