Deck Board Calculator: How Many Boards, Joists and Fasteners You Need

Work out deck board rows, joists and hidden fasteners from your deck size and board width, with the manufacturer spacing facts sourced.

in

No manufacturer lists a standard board width — enter the exact width of the boards you plan to buy.

in

Trex: "the recommended width-to-width gapping for Trex composite deck boards is 3/16 in. in all weather" — up to 3/8 in. under trees.

in

Trex: joists should generally be spaced no more than 16 inches OC for standard applications, and for diagonal board layouts, 12-inch spacing is required.

%

No manufacturer figure exists for deck board waste — 0 % is a starting point, not a claim that no cutting loss occurs.

How the number is worked out

The steps from input to result

This calculator reports full-length board rows, not a board count that assumes any cutting or splicing — a deck board is assumed to span the full deck length in one piece, so the number here is how many rows of boards you lay side by side, not a count of individual short boards from a lumberyard.

Between n board rows there are only n − 1 gaps, not n — the deck width plus one extra gap width, divided by a board's width plus its gap, gives the exact row count without underestimating by one row at certain deck widths.

The waste allowance only inflates the board rows you buy, to cover cutting loss — it never changes the fastener count, because fasteners are needed only for the rows you actually install, not for the extra material bought as a margin.

Trex specifies that joists should generally be spaced no more than 16 inches OC for standard applications, and that for diagonal board layouts, 12-inch spacing is required — the first is a ceiling, the second a requirement, so this calculator takes a plain spacing value with both facts as guidance rather than a fixed dropdown of the two.

Trex also specifies to install hidden fastener clips with one fastener at each joist, which is why the fastener count here is board rows times joists. Side gapping follows Trex's own figure — the recommended width-to-width gapping for Trex composite deck boards is 3/16 in. in all weather — with up to 3/8 in. recommended under trees.

The formula

Written out, so you can check it by hand

Board rows = round up( (deck width + gap) ÷ (board width + gap) × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ) · Joists = round up( deck length ÷ joist spacing ) + 1 · Fasteners = board rows without waste × joists

Worked example

Worked with the preset values

Deck length (the direction the boards run) 16 ftDeck width (across the board rows) 12 ftBoard width 5.5 inGap between boards 0.1875 inJoist spacing 16 inWaste allowance 0 %

A 16 ft × 12 ft deck with 5.5 in. wide boards, the default 3/16 in. gap, 16 in. joist spacing and no waste allowance: joists = round up(192 ÷ 16) + 1 = 13. Board rows = round up((144 + 0.1875) ÷ (5.5 + 0.1875)) = round up(25.35) = 26 rows. Fasteners = 26 rows × 13 joists = 338 hidden fastener clips.

What this calculator does not do

Named, not left out

  • 01No board-length splicing or butt-joint calculation — a board is assumed to span the full deck length in one piece. Trex's butt-joint gap figures (1/8 in. above 40 °F, 3/16 in. below 40 °F, 1/4–1/2 in. against fixed components) are provided for reference only and are not part of this calculation.
  • 02The 12-inch stair-stringer joist spacing Trex names elsewhere is not offered here — it applies to stair construction, not the deck-surface calculation this tool performs.
  • 03No conversion to fastener boxes or packs is made — no manufacturer figure exists for a package size.
  • 04No substructure sizing — this calculator covers board rows, joist count, and fasteners only, not beams, footings, or posts.
  • 05The 16 in. OC joist spacing is a manufacturer recommendation for standard applications, not a building code requirement — check your local code.
  • 06One deck area per run.
  • 07If deck length, deck width, or board width is left blank (0), or joist spacing is 0, all three results show 0 — that is a missing-input notice, not a calculated answer.
